Let the hyper-analysis begin.

On Saturday, the Lexington Stakes in Kinland marked the end of the preparatory season, and now the field is scheduled for the 148th race of the Kentucky Derby on May 7 in Churchill Downs.

History has shown that there are likely to be some failures in the next few weeks, but we know the best stories of this year’s race.

No overwhelming favorites. Very Brad Cox. Not Bob Buffert.

Several contenders have already arrived in Churchill Downs to prepare for the Kentucky derby, while others will be on their way in the next two weeks.

There is nothing official about the field until the post-election draw on May 2, but here is what we know right now about the top 20 horses on the Kentucky Derby points list.

Louis Brad Cox has 3 contenders

Buffert, the winner of six Kentucky derbies, is currently on a 90-day suspension and will not participate in this year’s Triple Crown series.

However, the three coaches who won the Kentucky derby have contenders this year.

Leading the way is Louisville native Cox, who won last year after Derby Mandalun’s disqualification from Medina Spirit, who trained with Buffett.

Cox has three contenders this year: Arkansas Derby winner Cyberknife and Louisiana Derby runner-up Zozos և Lexington winner Townie Port.

“They are three good foals. “They are all different,” Cox said. “Obviously, Zozos has no spice or experience, but he is a very good foal. I thought his run was a big run in the Louisiana derby, he’s only going to move on after that. Cyberknife is a very good foal. runs more, but takes longer to reach the mental space. He moved on after moving to Churchill. … And (Town Port) went up (in Lexington). “I thought he could win, but he really ran well.”

Two-time winner of the Kentucky Derby Todd Pletcher has a pair of contenders for the winner of the Wood Memorial in Mo Donegal and the second place winner of the Florida derby Charge It. Doug O’Neill, the two-time winner of the Kentucky derby, is a contender for the third place finish in the Santa Anita derby, which was won by Happy Jack.

This year, Cox and Pletcher are joined by a number of nominees: Steve Asmussen (Epicenter, Morello), Chad Brown (Zando, Early Voting), Tim Yaktin (Taiba, Messier), Kenny McPick (Tiz the Bomb, Smile Happy).

Both of Yaktin’s horses were previously trained by Buffert.

Who is the favorite?

There are several contenders for the morning favorite, but the deal looks like it will be the Epicenter.

The winner of the Louisiana Derby defeated his daughter in Churchill Downs in November, which has been 3-1-0 in four races at the Fair Grounds ever since.

The epicenter was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor at around 1:00 a.m. Sunday in Churchill.

“We’re just trying to build blocks in space so he can cover a mile and a quarter of a derby here,” Asmussen said. “I could not have felt better how he did, how much he liked it here at Churchill Downs.”

Asmussen is the most successful North American coach in history, but in the Kentucky derby, 0 vs. 23, the most start for a coach without ever winning it.

Who can stand back?

While most of the top 20 are committed to running as long as they are healthy, Brown said on Saturday that he was still standing for early voting for the second place at the Wood Memorial.

“Taking him in four weeks and delivering him, I’m worried he needs a little more time to recover,” Brown said. “I think just by looking at the horse, seeing what its energy level is, we will assess what it needs in terms of the time between races.”

If early voting backs down, Medina’s pioneer, number 21 on the points list, will step down. The third place winner in the Louisiana derby, the pioneer of Medina, will present Pletcher as the third contender for the Derby.

Where were they born?

The top 20 to 16 are bred in Kentucky, with Crown Pride (Japan), Simplification (Florida), Un Ojo (New York) and Messier (Ontario) standing out.

The Crown Pride will be just the second Japanese breed to take part in the Kentucky derby. Master Fencing was the first in 2019, occupying the sixth place.

Simplification will be the first Florida resident to win the Derby since 1997’s Silver Charm. Un Ojo will only try to become the second New Yorker to win the Derby by joining Funny Cide (2003). Messier will try to become the third Canadian-born to win the Derby by joining Sunny’s Halo (1983) and Northern Dancer (1964).

The last horse bred outside of Kentucky to win the Derby was the California-bred California Chrome in 2014.

Who is the main father?

Gun Runner, who finished third in the 2016 Kentucky derby before embarking on a great career as an older horse, has three generations in the field this year: Cyberknife, Taiba և Early Voting.

Not This Time (Epicenter, Simplification) և Race Day (White Abarrio, Barber Road) both have two sons in the field.
